A Beautiful Spring Birth Story | Minnesota Birth Photography
There’s something about spring in Minnesota that feels like a fresh chapter—the air is softer, the light is warmer, and the days are full of promise. On this particular day, I was headed to document something truly special: the birth of Alex and Joe’s third baby—their first daughter.
I started my morning in my office about 45 minutes away, feeling that familiar blend of excitement and nerves that comes with birth photography. Births can be wonderfully unpredictable, especially when it’s the third baby. Alex had originally been scheduled for an induction, but plans had shifted, and I knew things could move quickly.
On my way, I made a little stop at Mocha Monkey, a cozy Minnesota coffee shop that always feels like a hug in a cup. I grabbed a snack and a regular coffee—though next time, I’d probably go decaf. The caffeine plus my pre-birth jitters had me buzzing with excitement before I even arrived. Still, there was something grounding about settling into the Ridgeview Medical Center lobby for a couple of hours, listening to the soft piano music, beading a bracelet, and reading from the stack of books they offer to guests. It set such a calm tone for the day ahead.
A Birth Space Full of Love, Music, and Strength
When I stepped into Alex’s birth space, it felt like walking into a cocoon of warmth and love. The lights were soft, the air was calm, and a beautiful playlist played in the background, giving the room its own heartbeat. This birth was especially meaningful for Alex—after previous birth trauma and loss, she was determined to create a space where she felt safe, supported, and heard.
Her doula, Emily, had been with her throughout this pregnancy, encouraging her, praying over her, and helping her create a thoughtful birth plan that reflected her needs and hopes for the day. That care showed in every detail of the room.
Alex labored with grace and focus, moving between standing, sitting, and soaking in the warm tub. Joe never left her side. He held her hand, whispered encouragement, and looked at her with a love that spoke volumes. Emily guided them both—offering position suggestions, reminding Alex to breathe through each wave, and showing Joe ways to provide physical and emotional support.
Also by her side was Alex’s best friend, Emily (yes, two Emilys!), whose presence brought both emotional comfort and moments of laughter in between contractions.
A Daughter’s First Hello
After about four hours of active labor, Alex and Joe welcomed their first daughter into the world. The room filled with joy, relief, and the kind of awe that only happens in those first moments of meeting your child.
Alex’s “push present” was one for the books—a huge, delicious Jimmy Johns sub sandwich that made everyone smile. She enjoyed it with the kind of satisfaction only possible after hours of hard work.
And then there was the placenta—an incredibly healthy, thriving organ weighing over two pounds. It was a fascinating reminder of the body’s strength and ability to sustain life. In one of the truest acts of friendship, her best friend Emily took it home and froze it for Alex, making sure it would be preserved exactly as she wished.
Why I Document Birth Stories Across Minnesota
From Maple Grove to Waconia, and beyond, birth photography is about so much more than pictures—it’s about preserving the whole story. The raw power of a mother’s strength. The tenderness of a partner’s support. The calming presence of a doula. The details you might forget—the music that played, the first bite of your favorite food, the touch of a hand on your back.
When the years pass and memories fade, these photographs bring it all back—the sights, the emotions, and the love that filled the room.
If you’re expecting and considering birth photography anywhere in Minnesota, I’d be honored to preserve your story in a way that is authentic, emotive, and true to you.
